Eris Spherical Watch – A Unique Watch from Pierre Junod

Monday 21 September 2009

If you’re bored with the normal way a watch presents time whether in digital or analog display, then you should have a look at the newly launched watch from Pierre Junod Switzerland which named after a newly discovered planet – Eris Spherical Watch. It is a unique watch that gives you a different experience in seeing

The Eris watch is designed by students from Geneva’s School of Applied Arts (l’Ecole d’Arts Appliqués Genèva). Like its name, the watch is round in shape and made with anthracite anodized aluminum for the case with laser engraved numbers, and mineral glass in the centre of the watch.

Besides the unique outfit design, the way Eris displays time is also highly innovative. It looks similar like other analog display but with a different way of presentation. The time displayed is by two pointers: a white hour hand and an orange minute hand. Both pointers orbit around the ‘equator’ of the globe. The minutes are indicated on the upper hemisphere while the hours are designated at the southern.

The size of the Eris spherical watch is slightly smaller and a little heavier than a squash ball. Its diameter is 33.2mm with a weight of 36g. It can be used as a pocket watch or worn around the neck. It can also be used as a normal small desk clock.

Projection Mobile Phone

Tuesday 7 April 2009

Now this is one really cool gadget. We are talking about a cell phone that is also a projector. Although it is not really available for the public yet, just take a look at how interesting it is. The gadget we are talking about was designed by Stefano Casanova and runs on Windows, one mobile phone that is more than capable and willing to project what you have on it on a wall or any flat surface you would want. One fact that we definitely liked is that the LCD is the part that integrates the light of the projector. All you really need to do is flip the mobile phone’s screen and the projector starts working. It is interesting but we can not say if it will be successful or not. We will just have to wait and see.

Western Digital 2 TB Hard Disk

Western Digital is very close to setting a record in the world of technology. It seems that a leak inside the company recently let us all know that the Western Digital Caviar Green WD20EADS hard disk is to be launched soon. We are talking about a hard drive of 2 TB of storage space. This is basically twice the amount that we see in the top model so far present in WD’s line of hard disks. Unfortunately rumor has it that this new gadget will only work at an RPM of 5400 in order to offer a good power efficient design. On the other hand we are referring to a SATA hard disk that features o cache of 32 MB. At the moment we do not know when the device is going to be released although it might be this week. The price is still a mistery but we expect something around $230.

The 30,000 Dollars Computer

Well, whoever would buy this computer can say that he/she has no use of his/her money and has so much of it that it does not really matter what it is spent on. We are talking about the new Monseual 701 Jewelry PC, which is designed for millionaires. As you probably already figured out from the title of this post, the computer costs 30 thousand dollars. As far as we know this is the most expensive computer ever to be made in Korea. We are referring to an impressive 3,554 crystals (Swarovski of course) and a PC case that is created out of glass and gold.

You are probably interested of the specs as the price tag must come with something really special. Well, you would get 500 GB of storage space thanks to the included hard disk, an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, the ATI Radeon HD 4000 and some built in speakers. Not much is it?

SanDisk Sansa Fuze Review

Sansa Fuze

The Sansa Fuze from SanDisk, is a cool little MP3/4 player along the same vein as the iPod Nano. We’ve recently been sent one to play with so here are our thoughts and findings (or a review so to speak).

Aesthetically the Fuze is a cute little player. The physical UI consists of a rotating front dial which also acts as the 4 navigation buttons with the center button for selection. The display crisp with a resolution of 220 x 176, large enough for watching the odd music video but you wouldn’t want to watch a feature length film on it. Sound quality was good (though as with just about any MP3 player the supplied headphones aren’t the greatest). What most impressed me about the Fuze are the extra features that you don’t find on other (note iPod) players, including:

  • Built in microphone
  • FM radio
  • microSD Slot, a really cheap way to expand the capacity
  • Easy to transfer files (drag and drop) without the need of propriety software

Though there are a few downsides:

  • Propriety USB connection, it obviously comes the cable but a standard mini USB connection would be much more convenient especially for charging
  • You bookmark videos but not audio books

new iPod Nano, iPod Touch 2G and iTunes 8

Apple Let's Rock event was very anticipated by every Apple fan or gadget lover, because this is the place to announce new products, models and services. And this time it was really worth waiting for: new iPod Nano 4G, redesigned iPod Touch, small update of Classic and a lot of new colors for Shuffle... Firmware update for iPhone along with iPod Touch, which carries number 2.1, and new version of iTunes program - these announcements would be enough for several events! However, they all came together at once, and this is the small roundup of all announcements made at this Apple event.

Pictures of new iPod Nano made a big buzz in the Internet not so long ago, making this announcement the most anticipated. New Nano was certainly worth waiting for. It is now taller than 3G, and the sides are slightly curved. But what is really different is the screen layout - now it is portrait instead of landscape. Built-in accelerometer controls the display and turns image if iPod is turned on side, making the movie playback more comfortable. Controls are also shifted to match the image on the screen. It supports all iPod Nano 3G games, however, they must be played in landscape mod. New Nano has totally revamped interface, somehow resembling that seen on the iPod Touch. Battery life was increased, and now it is 24 hours for music and 4 hours for video. Even with a hardware upgrade, Nano 4G remained very thin, thinner than any other music player on the market. Prices were announced too - 8 GB will be sold for 149 USD, 16 GB - for 199 USD.

With its new model lineup, Apple introduced a new and interesting feature for all of its music players - Genius mode. This is a feature that will be familiar to all Last.fm users - it can make up smart playlists from songs that go great together. When turned on in the iTunes, it sends information from your music library to Apple, synchronizing with their online database and making a playlist that is made perfectly for your taste. Maybe it won't make the perfect playlist the first time, but it will evolve as more songs are collected in the online database. All new player models have that feature in menu - iPod Nano, Classic and Touch.

Classic upgrade was least interesting than others, because the only change is its capacity - now it is 120 GB. It supports all new features including Genius mode, has improved battery life and that's all. Prices are already available - 120 GB model will be sold for 250 USD. Same for Shuffle - it will have no hardware updates at all, Apple just increased the amount of color options, so you can select from four new colors - vibrant blue, green, pink, and red.

iPhone and iTouch firmware upgrade is almost completely a bug-fix release, which removes existing bugs, enables Genius mode, improves battery life and backup speed. It will be free for all iPhone users, but if you own iTouch you will need 10 dollars to buy this upgrade. iPod Touch also had some small update - WiFi antenna looks much better integrated, internal speakers sound better, and it is even thinner now.

iTunes was also reworked, and new, 8 version of famous music manager brings a lot of new interesting options. First of all, it supports brand new Genius feature, helping to collect data for this service to operate correctly. Another new feature found is new method of browsing your music collection, named Grid view. It can display all your albums in grid and gives you possibility to change the size of grid elements so you can navigate through your collection more comfortably. New Genius sidebar can offer you songs from iTunes Store based on your musical tastes, so you would easily discover new music that you will probably like. Visualizer was also improved, now it is way more beautiful and entertaining.

This year's Apple Let's Rock event was rich for new announcements. New and greatly improved interface of iPod Nano, new Genius function, firmware update for iPhone and iTouch, and a new version of iTunes program - many updates for one event, don't you think? Unfortunately, iPod Classic update was very minor, but does it have the need in major redesign? Don't fix what is already working great, that is the main strategy for Apple at this point. Even if new Nano looks so similar to Microsoft Zune, it is still Apple, and it does have many things Zune hasn't - including huge worldwide fan base. So let's wait for other big announcements from Apple - maybe they will include the clipboard ability in the iPhone at last?
